My 914-6 GT Clone came with some pretty difficult to use fixed targa top mounts. They bolt the rear of the top to the targa bar where the factory latches once were. I have all the original hardware to return the latches, which I'd like to do especially after installing a GT roll bar where access to the bolts is limited.

Before I swap back, is there any significant structural reason for these fixed mounts I should consider. I don't mind loosing a bit of rigidity in the top mount for the convenience of being able to remove the top easily. My car is mostly a street runner but I do take it to Lime Rock occasionally. I presume that the GT roll bar I added has also strengthened the targa section of the car and may mitigate any flex in the car from the factory top set up.

Thanks,

John

John,
The metal part is for when you remove the factory latches. It just bolts the roof on as racers do. Getting the targa top off with a full cage is very difficult.

Does your roll bar bolt to the shoulder belt mount?

Looks like your top has been reinforced, it will provide some rigidity. You have the top off now, do you drive it without the top? If you’re ok with the flex without the top, there’s no reason not to swap back the factory hardware if you’re looking to remove the top easier.

I have 2 cars with cages, one a bolt in (that was welded), the other a full custom cage, both are easy to get the tops on and off with factory latches. As long as you can slide a finger to pull the hook over the pin on the rears, you’re fine.

Thanks,

The roll bar does bolt to the shoulder belt mount. But works fine with the side bolster in place.

I'm going to finish mounting the roll bar and harnesses and put one of the latches back on to see if I have proper clearance to use them. I'd prefer to have the latches if they will work.

Then it should provide some stiffness. Of course a full cage would add more. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Good luck with the latches.
